Ready-made vs. Custom IoT Solutions: What is the Difference?

More and more companies are adopting IoT solutions to optimize their processes. This leads to increasing demand for solutions across various industries and use cases. This article addresses the question of the differences between a ready-to-use IoT solution and a custom solution. The advantages and disadvantages of each are considered to make a clear decision in the end.

Advantages of ready-made IoT solutions

Ready-to-use IoT solutions can generally be deployed directly in practice after a one-time payment or via a subscription. The application is developed for the broad market or a specific sector, making implementation very quick and easy. At the same time, the costs are lower. The goal of a company that develops software for IoT applications, for example, is to sell it multiple times.

This can be very lucrative and simultaneously reduces costs for any company wishing to purchase this software. At the same time, a wide range of information is collected, allowing the software to be continuously improved and becoming less risky due to the many different applications and corresponding adjustments. Additionally, the buyer already knows what to expect and what not before purchasing.

Disadvantages of ready-made IoT solutions

In addition to the numerous and indeed valuable advantages of ready-made IoT solutions, there are also disadvantages. Sometimes it is enough to change the perspective to turn an advantage into a disadvantage. Particularly the easy implementability and the design of the IoT application, which is deliberately suitable for many different companies, ensures that flexibility is lacking in specific use cases. Individual customization could also prove difficult.

Providers may not offer such a service at all. Individual customization could be added internally by the company later, if the provider of the IoT applications allows it. Even if such access is permitted, it would involve significant effort, as the software, to stay with the same example, was written by an external company, and thus comments or understanding of the code are missing.

Lack of customization options can therefore impair compatibility, which in turn makes scalability more difficult compared to tailored IoT applications. Another disadvantage of ready-made IoT products is the dependency on the provider. Once a provider has been chosen, it would be difficult to switch for various reasons.

For example, if a smart home system has been purchased and you want to switch providers, this is only possible by purchasing a new system, which presents a high cost barrier. This can also mean that another provider on the market offers new features for their smart home system. You do not have access to these at this time because you are tied to your own provider. Again, the same cost barrier arises that you would have to overcome for these features. It shows the lack of control through ready-made IoT solutions.

Advantages of custom IoT solutions

The advantages of tailored IoT solutions are, as one might imagine, very extensive. Therefore, there will certainly be some advantages not listed in this section. Or the advantages relate to specific use cases and are therefore not generally understandable.

Custom IoT products are developed for a specific company or a specific task of a company division, as the name already suggests. This means that the product exactly meets the requirements and is therefore more effective than an already finished IoT application. This ensures an optimal transition for the integration of the product and collaboration with existing systems in the company. Additionally, the IoT application can be adjusted and optimized over time if needed. The result is complete control over the hardware and software used.

Particularly relevant for companies is the ability to stand out from the competition. This can certainly be achieved through custom IoT solutions to gain a market advantage. Especially if competing companies are not up to date technologically, the company can gain an advantage much more easily and quickly through the implementation of individually developed IoT solutions and their scalability.

Disadvantages of custom IoT solutions

The mentioned advantages of custom IoT solutions come with a corresponding price. Particularly the acquisition cost is significantly higher, as a custom-made product can only be sold exactly once, resulting in immense costs for the producing company of the IoT application, which must be paid by the buyer.

In addition, such individual development takes a lot of time, as product conception often has to start from scratch. This is particularly problematic if the desired product is to be available as soon as possible, quickly creating a conflict between quality and time expenditure. Especially when the need for a custom IoT application arises and you would like to have it already implemented. Additionally, very close collaboration is advisable to ensure that the end product meets the requirements as well as possible.

This means not only the purchase price must be calculated, but also the required internal employee hours. Particularly high risks arise with such custom products due to vendor lock-in, as switching providers is almost impossible and associated with higher costs. The selection should therefore be made very carefully, considering that a cheap provider can cost significantly more time and money if the end product does not meet the requirements.

In general, it can be said that when deciding whether to use a ready-to-use or a custom IoT application, the time and cost factor must be particularly considered, as well as how the application should look in the end.

Both models definitely have their justification. Both custom and ready-made IoT products have advantages and disadvantages. Which is the right choice should be assessed on a case-by-case basis. For simple topics and especially when there are enough suitable products on the market, ready-to-use IoT products can be a quick and easy solution. For highly complex topics and issues that require a high time and cost investment, custom development may be the more appropriate choice in the long term.

In general, it is important to know the advantages and disadvantages and to consider each situation individually to make a differentiated decision about which option is the better choice in each case. Let's find out together in a demo which solution is best suited for you and your processes.
