The market research company IoT Analytics has examined in its LPWAN Market Report 2018-2023 in greater detail how the market around the LPWAN technologies has developed thus far. The comparison of radio technologies confirms the perception of most industry experts: in the unlicensed radio spectrum, Sigfox and LoRaWAN play an increasingly important role. In the licensed part of the spectrum, NB-IoT and LTE-M are in the lead. The growth of IoT connectivity technologies is already considerable and it is predicted that in the medium term the number of LPWAN ports will grow by 109% per year.
According to the study, mobile operators are pursuing four different strategies for their bets on the future:
- Strategy: Ignoring LPWAN technologies (or no clear strategy yet)
- Strategy: Focus on a licensed LPWAN technology
- Strategy: Focus on two licensed LPWAN technologies
- Strategy: Focus on licensed and unlicensed LPWAN technologies
For technical and strategic reasons, there is a trend towards Strategies No. 3 and No. 4, that is, several LPWAN technologies being operated in parallel. Technically because the combination of LoRaWAN and NB-IoT, for example, offers great benefits in terms of range and coverage. Strategically, reducing the risk outweighs the overhead of operating two LPWAN technologies, according to IoT Analytics analysis.
The researchers’ study confirms the opinion of many experts. The added benefit of a multi-technology strategy supports the expansion of the Internet of things and the speed of development of the IoT market more than it inhibits by an artificially-maintained technological competition.
